6 Tips to Prevent Major Sewer Line Disasters in Your Home

Sewer Lines
|

Every year, clogged drains and sewer lines cause major problems for thousands of homeowners in  Marietta, GA, and the Atlanta Metro Area. This happens because most homeowners do not care too much about their sewer system until something gets wrong. Here are a few signs of clogs that you should be looking out for:

Slowly flushing commode can be a sign of clogs and drain issues. This is because when water goes down the drain, it pulls everything with it. If your toilet takes too long to flush then this may be a problem!

Clogged drains in sinks or tubs

When you notice clogged drains in your sink or bathtub, this can mean that there are clogs in the line leading from your home to the sewer or clogged drain traps.

Sewage smell coming out of your drains

If you notice a smell coming out of your drain, especially when there is no reason for it (for example if all water has been drained), then this can be a sign that something is wrong with your sewer system.

Sewage back up

If you notice sewage coming out of clogged drains or toilets, this can signify something is very wrong with your sewer system.

If you live in the Atlanta Metro area and have experienced clogged drains, slow drains, or sewage backups, this blog post is for you! We will provide 6 tips that may help prevent these disasters from happening to your home.

1. Never throw toilet paper, tissues, and feminine products in the toilet!

This is the number one clog issue for toilet drains. Based on our experience more than 60% of the toilet blockages are caused by this habit. Make sure you throw your tissues and other waste in a garbage can! If you are doing it, stop today! It can lead to a major sewer line blockage and thousands of dollars spent for clog removal.

– Keep a garbage can next to your toilet for all the waste you want to throw away!

2. Avoid putting food down the drain to stop clogs from forming.

Having garbage disposal does not mean you can throw everything in your kitchen drain. After a long day, we are all tired of washing the dishes and sometimes we just want to throw everything away. Do not do that! Grease, oil, and fats are some of the biggest enemies of your sewer lines system. They create layers over your pipes and with the time they form drain clogs, the drain clogs lead to major sewer line clogs.

– Do not put grease, oil, or fats down your drain!

3. Remove hair clogs once they begin.

Hair blockages are the most common drain issues affecting sink and shower drains. It is important to remove the drain buildup as soon as it begins to form. Make sure that you use caution when removing drain clogged hair.

Cleaning drain clogs caused by hair can be frustrating and unpleasantly messy, but it will prevent bigger damage in the future!

4. Get a water filtration system!

One of the most common causes of clogged drains is caused by the minerals in the water. If you notice your drains clogged after the water has been turned off, then it might be due to hard water.

Hardness in tap water is measured by grains per gallon (gpg). Water with less than 17 gpg qualifies as “soft” and will not cause clogs easily. A level of around 20-30 gpg is considered “moderately hard,” and for this level of hardness, a water softener will be required to prevent future blockages. It is an investment that will pay off soon enough and prevent bigger problems from happening to your sewer lines system!

5. Lookout for roots!

Tree roots clog drain and sewer lines every day. If you notice your drains getting clogged often, it might be due to tree roots clogging your sewer system! Tree roots can grow into the pipes over time and start clogging them up until they are completely blocked. Performing a camera inspection of your sewer line every few years is a great way to make sure that your sewer line clog is not caused by roots.

6.  Get annual inspections from A Licensed Plumber!

Getting clogs is inevitable if you do not take proper care of your sewer lines.

Even the best drain clog prevention methods will not work 100% and clogs may still occur, which means that it’s important to have a licensed plumber come inspect your home’s sewer system at least once per year!

Performing a camera inspection of your sewer line once a year will provide you with full information about the condition of every inch of your sewer line. Performed by a trained professional who can explain every detail you want to know, sewer camera inspection will keep your peace of mind, save you thousands of dollars and prevent disasters you do not want to see!
